Water Problems - Fulmic Acids / Tannins

This has huge headache potential for domestic users. South African coastal areas suffer from this due in a large part to the natural fauna and particularly the Fynbos growth in the higher South Western Cape areas from where many towns have there catchment areas for drinking water collection.

In heavy rainfall and other rainfall times large amounts of this brown , corrosive and acidic run-off are swept into damns and filtration plants. The tannic acids are extremely fine in nature and extensive coagulation and flocculation are required. This hould be followed by chlorination and filtration but due to budget constraints many small municipalities simply cannot afford these steps and the consumer is left with the problems.

Clothes are stained during washing and extra heat and bleaching is required, the soft corrosive water attacks metal plumbing , heating elements and geysers costing large amounts in annual repairs.

Simply stabilising the low pH goes a long way to remove unpleasant tastes , odours and some discolouration. Additional chlorine dosing in tanks with aeration so that the disinfectant can dissapate is a good step. Subsequent carbon & sediment filtration then removes the excess and the water can be used and is more aesthitically pleasing.

An alternative is to use a tannin softener in an ion-exchange vessel as you would with a normal softener. This , unfortunately, is very expensive and out of the reach of most homes costing in excess of R15 000 just for this step alone.

It is imperative that you filter your water to a quality that you can rely on and in a way that when municipal systems fail you will still be safe.
